Data Engineer

George Collins Headshot

My role at Waterstons is...

Using my strengths to support our customers in a variety of ways. From developing data warehouses and pipelines using new and innovative technologies, to creating reports to show important relationships in data, and lots in between!

My life away from work is...

Outside of work, I am what is coming to be called a “Disruptive Puzzler”. Disruptive Puzzling is about taking well known, competitively played puzzles and turning them completely on their head. The scene is currently a Wild West of anti-puzzles but a new governing body has just grown up to try to provide some structure to proceedings. The Disruptive Puzzling Association has just declared its first formally accepted sport to be Anti-Cubing, which is good for me because I’ve been a big proponent of AC for a few months now. Anti-Cubing is like Rubik’s Cubing but instead of trying to solve the puzzle you have to keep it in an unsolved state, without any sides being completed, while rotating is as fast as possible for as long as possible. The current world record is an incredible nineteen hours.

I’ll be with you when...

You want to move towards a new and cutting edge way of storing and transforming your data.

My sector strengths are...

All things logic! I have a passion for programming and have brought that into my day job in the form of Python and Databricks. If something can be automated, then I’ll be sure to automate it! From simple bespoke scripts to speed up monotonous tasks, to complex scheduled jobs handling daily chores. I love to make sure that anything repetitive is handled automatically, leaving the interesting and engaging tasks for the humans!
